Police: Man killed in his truck by fallen shipping container in South Philly

Philadelphia police are investigating after an industrial accident left a 52-year-old man dead Monday afternoon at Packer Marine Terminal in South Philadelphia.

Authorities said the victim was killed when a cargo container fell on top of his pickup truck around 12:15 p.m.

An aerial photo from the scene of the accident shows the victim's white pickup truck with extensive damage to its cab.

Police said the incident occurred in the 3300 block of Columbus Boulevard, though a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority told Philly.com the container fell at a lot adjacent to the Packer Marine Terminal, known as the Publicker site.

A preliminary explanation for the fallen container is that it may have been knocked off by a top pick, the machine used to move cargo containers.

The victim was not immediately identified and an investigation continues.
