SugarHouse Casino renews sponsorship of Mummers Parade

A Philadelphia tradition of Mummers strutting down Broad Street will continue through 2020 thanks to a new deal with a local casino.

SugarHouse Casino will serve as the title sponsor of the Mummers Parade after signing a three-year extension, casino officials announced Friday. This year's event was the last parade covered in the existing contract. The casino became the primary sponsor of the parade in 2012.

“Nothing says Philadelphia like the New Year’s Day Mummers Parade, and SugarHouse loves the Mummers and everything about the celebration,” said Wendy Hamilton, the casino's general manager.

The 2017 version of the parade will mark the first performances since the city offered training on cultural appropriation, the nature of satire and sensitivity.

The parade features four divisions: Fancy, Comic, Wench Brigade and String Band. The deal also includes the Fancy Brigade finale, which takes place inside the Convention Center.

This year's parade, the 117th edition, is scheduled for Jan. 1 beginning at 9 a.m. outside City Hall. The festivities will air live on PHL17.
