Swarthmore student dies after fall from cliff behind campus

Incident in Crum Woods under investigation

A student at Swarthmore College died Saturday after falling from a cliff in a wooded area located behind the school's suburban Philadelphia campus.

The student, identified by school officials as Anthony Chiarenza, of Bayside, New York, was alone when he fell between 40 and 50 feet in Crum Woods, police say. He was found by local residents and later died from his injuries, according to NBC 10.

Crum Woods is located at the back of the campus property and includes hiking trails and rocky cliffs.

The fall took place on the same day new Swarthmore president Valerie Smith officially took over the position. School officials said one-on-one counseling would be available for students and Smith urged the Swarthmore community to hold Chiarenza's family in their thoughts.

The incident remains under investigation.
