The running group The Fishtown Beer Runners gather once a week to run three to five miles, then pop into a pub for a nice, cold beer. The reason? For science.

The quirky story is the subject of a local documentary titled "Beer Runners." In the film, the group makes a pilgrimage to Spain where it meets with Manuel J. Castillo, MD. He is a Professor and Chair of Medical Physiology at Granada Medical School who conducted a study that stated beer and water have similar rehydration effects. Members of the Fishtown Beer Runners used his research as the basis for their club.

The film premiered at the 24th Philadelphia Film Festival in 2015 and quickly gained attention. It won the Sharon Pinkenson Award for Best Local Feature at the festival and was selected for the Madrid International Film Festival and the Canadian Sport Film Festival.

Now, Philadelphians get a chance to see "Beer Runners" again on the big screen at the venue Johnny Brenda's. The event takes place Sunday, Jan. 10 and tickets includes one complimentary Kenzinger, courtesy of Philadelphia Brewing Co.

Award-winning author and running guru, Chris McDougall, will run from Ardmore to Johnny Brenda's for the screening. Those who want to join should meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Ardmore train station, located at 39 Station Ave.
