New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie proposed a $44 million spending cut on snow removal for 2016,  a 49.3 percent reduction from the current fiscal year, NJ.com reported.

The $33.8 billion 2016 Fiscal spending plan announced last week, is expected to raise overall state spending by 3.1 percent.

The reduction in snow removal funds is part of a broader $118 million cut, or 8.4 percent, for the state Department of Transportation, from $1.41 billion to $1.29 billion, NJ.com said. It is the steepest departmental cut in the budget.

The proposal is not set in stone.

Lawmakers will have the opportunity to restore some or all of the snow removal or broader transportation funding cuts during the budget negotiation process before the start of the fiscal year on July 1.
