Suspect fatally shoots Delaware state trooper outside Wawa

A Delaware state trooper was fatally shot Wednesday afternoon outside a Wawa in the Newark area, sending authorities in pursuit suspect who later barricaded himself inside his home.

Authorities first reported to shots fired at the Wawa located at 1605 Pulaski Highway, where the trooper, whose identity has not yet been released, had stopped to inspect a suspicious vehicle, according to The News Journal.

One of the vehicle's occupants reportedly exited the vehicle and shot the trooper multiple times. The trooper was transported to Christiana Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Police were able to arrest one of the occupants of the vehicle at the Wawa. The second suspect was tracked to his home in Middletown at the Brick Mill Farm Development, located on the 500 block of St. Michaels Drive.

The suspect remains barricaded inside his home, where he has refused to comply with orders and continued to fire shots at police offices. Authorities said they believe the suspect is alone inside the property.

Several area schools were temporarily placed on lockdown. Police continue to advise residents to stay inside their homes and lock their doors until notified otherwise.
