Off duty Sayreville, N.J., police officer found fatally shot in parked car

The unidentified officer's body was discovered early Monday in a parking lot of the vacant Amboy Multiplex Cinemas

An off-duty New Jersey police officer was found fatally shot inside a vehicle parked outside if a vacant movie theater in Sayreville, Middlesex County, on Monday morning.

According to unconfirmed reports from NJ.com, the body of the unidentified male officer was found inside his personal vehicle, which was parked in parking lot of the Amboy Multiplex Cinemas.

The discovery was made at about 7:15 a.m. on Monday following a report to the Sayreville Police Department about a body near the former movie theater, according to NJ.com.

Sayreville Police told NJ.com an investigation is currently underway; though it wouldn’t elaborate on why the officer may have been parked in the lot.

New York Daily News reported that the officer “may have been probing a report of a suspicious person when he was shot,” though it is unconfirmed. There have also been unconfirmed reports that the officer was a nine-year veteran with the police department and had worked undercover.

NJ.com – reporting from the scene following the discovery – said numerous police vehicles, officers and crime scene tape surrounded the vicinity.

The theater building is located off the Garden State Parkway and has been closed for about a decade, NJ.com reports.
