Weekend weather: Philadelphia, Jersey Shore, Rehoboth Beach

Mike Breslin of Northeast Philadelphia, who works with Capewell and Sons Inc. of Tacony, jackhammers the sidewalk Friday at Fourth Street and Girard Avenue in Olde Kensington. The mercury hit 90 by 11:30 a.m., but Breslin said it felt hotter on Thursday.

Things are expected to cool down slightly this weekend after temperatures rose to between 91 and 94 degrees on Friday, causing The National Weather Service to issue a head advisory and forcing Philadelphia public schools to dismiss at noon.

According to a recent national study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, more than half of all children and adolescents in the United States are not getting enough hydration — most likely because they’re not drinking enough water. Nearly a quarter of the children and adolescents in the study reported drinking no plain water at all.

“The good news is that this is a public health problem with a simple solution,” said senior author Steven Gortmaker, professor of the practice of health sociology. “If we can focus on helping children drink more water — a low-cost, no-calorie beverage — we can improve their hydration status, which may allow many children to feel better throughout the day and do better in school.”

With the heat continuing into this weekend, people are encouraged to drink plenty of water and avoid spending too much time in the sun.
