Johnny Hockey on playing for Flyers: ‘It’d be sweet’

South Jersey has produced its fair share of elite athletes in multiple sports that grew up fans of the Philadelphia teams. Everyone knows about the best baseball player on the planet’s obsession with the Eagles, but high-scoring Calgary Flames wing Johnny Gaudreau also grew up on the Jersey side of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

And talking to the 94 WIP Morning Show, Johnny Hockey was asked if he would like to play with the hometown Flyers at some point in his career.

His response? “Yeah, it’d be sweet.”

“I’ve got a ton of family here, all my friends — I actually have a wedding this week here in South Jersey. All my friends come back here, all my good friends, and kids that I’ve played with my whole life are from South Jersey. So, it would be sweet to play here some day. You know you never know in sports, but it’s a lot of support back here in South Jersey and the Philly area.”

The 5’9”, 157-pound wing racked up 61 points (18 goals, 43 assists) in 72 games for the Flames last season, but odds are that he won’t be in Philly anytime soon. Last offseason, Gaudreau signed a six-year, $40,500,000 contract with Calgary.

But maybe at some point down the road, if some of the Flyers prospects and young players eventually turn the team into a contender, Johnny Hockey could be a final piece on a Stanley Cup run. Dare to dream, Flyers fans.
