Last Night: The Album Leaf/Rituals of Mine @ Johnny Brenda’s

When it comes to Rituals of Mine, it’s not just the stunning voice and propulsive beats that hook you. The kinetic movements of whole body, hair and drumstick make the group's shows a one-of-a-kind visual experience.

On Thursday, the California band formerly known as Sister Crayon — Terra Lopez on lush vocals, Dani Fernandez on percussion and new drummer Adam Pierce — delivered an explosive opening set that riveted Johnny Brenda’s during another of the venue’s 10th-anniversary shows. The sheer volume and energy sent a speaker crashing to the ground.

Rituals of Mine’s newest record, “Devoted,” is due Sept. 30; the band will be back in Philly to open for Tricky Oct. 27 at Underground Arts. Don’t sleep on them.

Bathed in dramatic backlighting, the sonic experience that is The Album Leaf took over the main set with equal parts calm and bombast. The band's recently released “Between Waves” was the backdrop for this appearance, and mastermind Jimmy LaValle led the four-piece and the crowd into fascinating sonic territory.
