Angelo's Pizzeria forced to close after fire in new South Philly restaurant

Angelo's spent 18 months transitioning from South Jersey to South Philly.

Angelo's Pizzeria hardly had been open for more than a week at its new Italian Market location, but building damage from a fire has closed the long-awaited shop back, at least for now.

Angelo's soft opening early last week was met with instant fanfare, especially after plans for the shop took 18 months to become reality following the close of the pizzeria's original Haddonfield, New Jersey, location.

The journey isn't over though, it seems, as its new location at Ninth and Fitzwater streets in South Philly had a fire at the restaurant that damaged a wooden floor joist beneath the oven, which had been imported from Italy.

The Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections have since ordered a shutdown at its 936 S. Ninth St. storefront, and it's unclear when it will be able to open again.

Owner Danny DiGiampetro reached out to the shop's extensive Instagram following to update fans about the fire and the pizza shop's status. His posts included a shot of the firefighters at the shop.

"Turns out we're a wood-fired pizza shop after all ..." one post reads.

"I'm certainly disappointed but feel great ... I have a beautiful wife for whatever reason loves me, even though I drug us into poverty opening this place and two beautiful, healthy children who we adore so I'm counting my blessings," DiGiampetro wrote on Instagram.

"Nobody was hurt, it's just property that can be fixed. I'll try to get open asap and again thank everyone for the well wishes!"
