The University of Pennsylvania's plans for future development came into sharper focus this week after Philadelphia's Civic Design Review Board approved the proposed Patient Pavilion near the West Philadelphia campus.

Designed by Foster + Partners, Penn Medicine's proposal calls for a rounded, 13-story facility that will include 500 inpatient rooms, an ER, a campus hub for Penn Medicine and connection points with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

The new building will replace the recently demolished Penn Tower at 1 Convention Ave..

"To design and deliver this new facility, we have assembled a talented team of experts who will work collaboratively to find and develop the most innovative facility solutions for improved healthcare delivery for generations to come," the university said in its CDR proposal.

Approval of the project comes a few months after Penn's proposed healthcare technology building gained CDR approval at 3600 Civic Center Way. Construction on the eight-story project is planned to begin early next year. A second phase of construction will bring the tower up to 18 floors.

The New Patient Pavilion is expected to be finished in 2021.
