PFS Roxy stocks up on film series for spring

Series on Hitchcock, Baumbach and female docs are cropping up

As an extension of their annual Philadelphia Film Festival, The Philadelphia Film Society has set up 10 curated film series this spring. Beginning March 31 and running through May 31, the series will feature the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Noah Baumbach as well as themed series focused on world cinema and music-heavy films.

Passport to World Cinema

A selection of this year's best global cinema, this series features films from Hungary and China with more screenings to be added. Special guest speakers, like scholars and filmmakers, will appear at screenings to host discussions.

Hitchcock '48-'55

Taking a look at this specific time in the auteur's life, this series includes films by Alfred Hitchcock when he teamed up with Philadelphia's own Grace Kelly. "Rope," "Dial M for Murder," and "Rear Window" are all on the program.

Growing Up Baumbach: A Tribute to Noah Baumbach's 20 Years in Film

A retrospective of the writer and director's works, this series will feature films representing different life stages in reverse chronological order. "While We're Young," "The Squid and the Whale," and "Kicking and Screaming" will be screened throughout April.

Film Lab

PFS runs this science-based series once a month, where they pair up films with relevant specialists. On Tuesday, April 7, they'll show Spike Jonze's "Being John Malkovich" with a post-screening talk on immersion and telepresence with Aldis Sipolins. On May 5 food equity experts will host a chat after a screening of "Soylent Green."

The Graveyard Shift

Movies that will scare the pants off you plus suspenseful thrillers that will have you on the edge of your seat, from "Kung Fu Hustle" to "The Crow." This program runs all year.

Saturday Morning Specials & Sensory Friendly Sundays

Weekends are filled with children's classics like "The Sandlot" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" this spring. Sensory Friendly Sundays are the PFS Roxy's special screenings for first-time theater-goers and children with sensitivities to the usual movie environment. The volume is lowered, the lights are on and expectations to sit quietly go out the window.

In Focus: Docs by Women

Running monthly from April to July, this series shows documentaries created by female filmmakers. Showings of "How to Dance in Ohio" by Alexandra Shiva and "Vessel" by Diana Whitten will include Q&A sessions with the creators afterward.

Wedding Season

Get ready to walk down the aisle (or watch your friends get hitched) with movies celebrating that special day. "Bridesmaids" and "Father of Bride" are on the list, as are "Moonstruck" and "My Best Friend's Wedding." All wedding screenings are BYO wine, too!

Filmadelphia

This is also a once-a-month screening, featuring local filmmakers. Admission is free, though tickets are required. Tuesday, April 21 will feature four local short films and Tuesday, May 19 will feature Ryan Pomeranz's "Pennsylvania Holy Ghosts."

Sight and Soundtrack

From "Beyond the Lights" to "A Star is Born," this selection includes musicals, musician biopics and movies that just love music. Chances are you'll go home humming a tune from "Guys and Dolls" or "West Side Story."
