Philadelphia police officer injured in struggle with burglary suspect

Investigators say suspect struck officer with metal pole

A Philadelphia police officer was injured Thursday afternoon while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect in the Spring Garden section of the city, officials said.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at 3:26 p.m. in the basement of an apartment building located on the 1200 block of Ridge Avenue, 6 ABC reports.

Several officers responded to a report of a burglary at the apartment building and witnesses said the injured officer, who has not been identified, confronted a suspect armed with a metal pole.

The officer and the suspect engaged in a struggle in which the officer was struck and the suspect was tased. Both the officer and the suspect were injured in the skirmish.

Officials said the officer was transported to Temple University Hospital for treatment and was expected to be released. The suspect was transported by police to Hahnemann University Hospital. Investigators at the scene recovered the metal pole used by the suspect to strike the officer.

Charges against the suspect have not yet been announced.
