There's no shortage of great hamburgers in Philadelphia: P'unk Burger, Spot Burger, The Blue Duck and Standard Tap all come to mind as locks for a juicy meal.
And yet, sometimes, it's the more low-key restaurants that deserve all the praise for keeping it simple, cheap and still delicious.

Uproxx recently published a list of what its staff deems the "Absolute Best Burgers in America," a headline that puts these patties in a class of their own.
You may think of South Philly's Fountain Porter as more of a bar than a restaurant — it earned top honors from PhillyMag in 2016 — but whenever a place quietly excels at a particular dish, keeping the menu limited isn't such a bad strategy. While it's far from a secret that Fountain Porter makes an excellent $5 cheeseburger, now you can savor it at that price knowing it's one of the absolute best in the nation.
The selection comes from Uproxx's Stacey Ritzen, who described the "no frills" cheeseburger as follows—with a nod to "Parks and Rec":
It’s about a quarter-pound patty, perfectly seasoned, seared crisp on the outside and medium rare on the inside, served on a potato roll with lettuce, tomato, American cheese and two pickle slices on the slide.
It may not sound like much, but as a wise, great man once said, the best kind of burgers are simple: “a hamburger, made out of meat, on a bun.”
