Reports: 109 shots fired between nine officers, killing one suspect 'of serious concern'

The 109 shots fired between nine officers that left one suspect dead is "of serious concern," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross in a Friday afternoon press conference.

The shots were aimed at Christopher Sowell, 32, who police said choked his 12-year-old daughter, stabbed his 8-year-old son and his son's friend in their West Philadelphia home, according to Philly.com.

Sowell also cut and assaulted two other women when he ran to a family friend's house after the incident inside his own house.

Ross said that while a gun was believed to be involved, they haven't yet found one in the pending investigation, 6ABC reported. He also said that the high number of shots fired could be the result of "contagious gunfire," where police hear gunshots, think it's aimed at them, and fire back.

All of Sowell's victims are recovering at local hospitals and that their conditions are getting better.
