Deptford man takes his own life after lengthy police standoff

SWAT team sent robot inside home, closed nearby park

A lengthy police standoff in Deptford ended with a man committing suicide after barricading himself inside his home on Saturday afternoon, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said on Sunday.

Police in Deptford Township were dispatched to the 60-year-old man's home in Wrexham Court on Saturday afternoon after receiving reports that he had barricaded himself inside and was threatening self-harm, NJ.com reports.

As a precaution, authorities shut down nearby Fasola Park and closed off the road to incoming traffic. During the standoff, which lasted several hours, a SWAT team surrounded the and sent a robot inside to check on the man's well-being. The Camden County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was also at the scene.

Members of the SWAT team were able to make contact with the man, but when they finally entered the home, they found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he died from his injuries.

The cause of the incident has not been disclosed and no charges will be filed, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office confirmed.
