Is there any business proliferating more rapidly across the Philadelphia area than Wawa?
Maybe not quite, but Target's small-format stores are a close second.
In just the past few years, five Philadelphia locations have popped in Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, Roxborough and Fairmount. Thee additional stores are slated to open next year in Spring Garden, Northern Liberties and South Philly.

On Tuesday, Target announced plans to expand to the Main Line with a small-format store near the intersection Lancaster and Ardmore avenues.
“Our new Ardmore store will offer guests a convenient, one-stop shopping experience on the Main Line near the Ardmore Station and Haverford College," said Mark Schindele, senior vice president of properties at Target. "We’ll provide a curated assortment of exclusive apparel and accessories for the whole family, groceries, beauty products, and more, as well as a convenient pick-up point for online orders."
The lease for the 31,000-square-foot store was signed with RMC Developments. Target anticipates the location will employ between 50-70 people starting at a minimum wage of $11/hour. The company recently committed to raising that to $15 by 2020.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Target and welcome the first small-format store to the Ardmore community," said Joseph Hopkins, CEO of RMC Developments. "The store’s convenient location and curated assortment will be a great asset for residents, college students and commuters.”
The Ardmore store is expected to open by the end of 2019.
