If you're ready to kick it up a notch from those fun 5K obstacle courses, try out the Beast of the East 10K Mud Run, a military-style course made for both military and civilian runners. The event will take place on the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County, New Jersey on Saturday, September 19.

This run isn't like your typical mud run. It takes place over 6.2 miles of rough terrain with over 20 grueling obstacles. Participants will be swinging across horizontal ladders, climbing up rope nets, wading through slippery pits and running over muddy hurdles.

A costume contest for the teams with the best duds will take place prior to the run's third heat. All runners will be rewarded with post-race festivities, where food, beer and snacks will be available for purchase. Activities for children will be available too.

Spectators are welcome to watch runners take on the event, as long as they are registered beforehand and bring proper ID. (Find instructions here.) Because of its challenging nature, runners between the ages of 12 and 17 must run with an adult sponsor. Registration is open until Monday, September 14.
