'Amazing Race'-style game gets locals to find adventure in their city

Winners rewarded with island getaway

The 29th season of "The Amazing Race" premieres April 21 on CBS this year. In case you've never seen an episode (hard to believe), teams of two race around the world in a competition to win one million dollars.

Each week viewers tune in to the reality game show to witness the meltdowns and triumphs, as contestants decipher clues and race from location to location.

While getting a chance to compete on the show takes some luck -- and the ability to take off work for a month -- a new local opportunity offers something close to "The Amazing Race." There's no cash prize up for grabs, but there is an island getaway on the line.

Adventure Hunt describes itself as a "modern day treasure hunt," offering competitions across the county

The game will take place in Philadelphia on June 17, but early registration is already open. To play, register, download the app and then wait for Hunt Day.

At 9 a.m. on June 17, participants will receive a list of challenges in the Greater Philadelphia Area that must be completed to reach the treasure chest.

Just like in "The Amazing Race," players compete in teams of two and solve clues to reach their next destination.

While there won't be millions of viewers tuning in to watch the Adventure Hunt competition on TV, players could get some extra love on Instagram.

Participants are required to publicly post to their personal Instagram accounts during the game. The posts act as verification that players have completed challenges. Plus, it's a sly way for Adventure Hunt and it's partners to get a shout out (read more on the game's Instagram rules here).

Below is an example of a past challenge:

The Philadelphia team that reaches the treasure first will be rewarded with the grand prize. Winners from each city receive a six-day, five-night stay at the Red Frog Beach Island Resort in Bocas del Toro, Panama.

The top four Adventure Hunt teams in the country will also receive free airfare. Adventure Hunt participants will vote on which winning team from each region performed best.

Everyone else is on their own for getting to Panama.
