Just a few months after Wawa announced it would construct its seventh Philadelphia store at 19th and Market Streets, a new report hints that the region's king of convenience stores could open an eighth location in southwest Center City.
According to Naked Philly, plans for a mixed-used project at 22nd and South Streets, site of the soon-to-close Omega Pizza, calls for a new Wawa in addition to 20 residential units and five parking spaces.
The full project calls for 5,000 square feet of retail space, including a potential Wawa, inside a relatively straightforward building with brick and metal paneling.
Wawa debuted its flagship Center City location last September at Broad and Walnut Streets as a prototype for the open design of its newer stores throughout the Delaware Valley. The company threw a parade last month to celebrate the relocation of its original store in Ridley Township, Delaware County.
There are currently two Wawas in West Philadelphia, one in Port Richmond, one on South Street and two on Walnut Street. The company's beloved Chinatown location closed its doors for good last June after 20 years in the neighborhood.
The developers behind the project at 22nd and South Street will present their plans to the Center City Residents Association at 7 p.m. on July 26 at the Stevens Community Center.
