Six Super Bowl recipes for the gluttons or the gluten-free

Recipes Super Bowl
Bacon Beer Butter Tom D'Intino /for PhillyVoice

There is nothing less healthy than salted butter wrapped in bacon and deep fried in a thick beer batter.

The Super Bowl is upon us. Are you ready to embrace the revelry and gluttony? Do you want to go big? 370-pound lineman big? Wings are great. Nachos are delicious. Beer is life. But let’s go over the top this year. If you’re a gluten free paleo-vegan prepping for the ultimate cheat day or a disenfranchised football fan whose team failed to make the playoffs again and you're ready to walk into the light (depression and mental health issues are no laughing matter, but Jets fans are) then these recipes are for you.

Death Before Halftime

Beer battered bacon wrapped deep fried butter

Deep Fried Butter
Make sure all of your affairs are in order. Say a prayer to whatever God you believe in.

Frying cheese and chorizo biscuit sliders

Chorizo Burger
Queso de Freir is truly a culinary miracle. But fried cheese alone is not nearly heart-stopping enough. Here, we will take your Queso de Freir and raise you chorizo and biscuits to give you this cardiac-arresting slider.

Buffalo chicken ala panhaas

Tortilla Chips

Buffalo chicken dip is a staple at most Super Bowl parties. It is also one of the least healthy snacks. So how can we send it over the top? Double the cheese, add scrapple and serve it with our own grease-soaked salty tortilla chips. Scrapple makes everything better. Ask God when you meet him after gorging on this. He'll agree.

Healthy At Halftime

The wings. The beer. The bacon wrapped beer-battered deep fried cheese. The horror. By the end of the game you'll feel more PSI bloating than any of New England's footballs. But does it have to be this way? Whether you're hosting a Super Bowl party or crashing one (and bringing a plate of course). Here are some healthy alternatives to the standard greasy glory. If you munch on these instead of the buffalo chicken dip you might even get up extra early Monday morning and hit the gym before work. Or not. Either way, enjoy.

Vegetable spring rolls

Veggie Spring Rolls

Veggie spring rolls are an excellent snack. These are vegan as well as gluten-free (be mindful of what dipping sauce you use). They’re also a great way to clear out the crisper drawer in your fridge.

Hummus

Hummus

Served with chips or crudités, hummus is celebrated for its silky consistency and exotic flavor.

Pineapple guacamole

Guacamole
Avocados are a staple superfood packed with healthy monounsaturated fats. Add some pineapple and it really kicks it up in both flavor and nutrition.
