Since John Oliver left "The Daily Show" after his brief stint as host to start his own political satire show "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," the comedian has used his weekly platform at HBO to carefully dissect cases of political corruption and absurdity, touching on everything from economic inequality to the death penalty.
In his most recent opening monologue, Oliver provided insight on issues with the national infrastructure. About six minutes in, he used an infamous example from Philadelphia: the time a sausage sandwich saved I-95:
That's right. In case you forgot, back in 2008 two engineers spotted a huge crack in a column supporting I-95 above Richmond Street in Philadelphia following a craving for sausage sandwiches. Peter Kim, who at the time performed contract work for PennDOT, called in his concern after noticing the drastic change the structure of the bridge had undergone in just four months. Per Philly.com's original report:
"We were kind of taken aback by it, how much it had changed," said Kim. "You don't usually see that, that much change."
The structural integrity of all Pennsylvania bridges has been brought in to question recently. A report from Keystone Crossroads mapped out all of the structurally deficient bridges in the state last year, with Philadelphia containing a number of bridges that fell in that category:
