A puppy will get you outside to enjoy the summer air and ensure that you get some exercise.

Thinking about adopting a pet? Well now may be the perfect time.

As part of an initiative by NBC-owned stations, local participating animal shelters have agreed to waive all adoption fees (spay/neuter fees) on Aug. 15 --  "Clear the Shelters" Day.

By waiving fees, participants hope to help get as many animals adopted as possible.

“When you adopt an animal from a shelter, you save a life,” Ric Harris, president and general manager of NBC10 and Telemundo62 said in a statement.

“Many people don’t realize that there are so many loving and adoptable animals in shelters and rescue groups throughout our region. NBC10 and Telemundo62 are proud take part in this national effort to find loving homes for pets, while also shedding light on the importance of shelter adoption.”
