Medics amputate leg to free man pinned under freight train in NE Philly

A man remains hospitalized in Northeast Philadelphia after he was pinned under a freight train early Wednesday morning, 6ABC reports.

The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on the tracks near the 200 block of Grant Ave. near Welsh Road.

A 46-year-old man was struck by a CSX train and became trapped. A surgical team from Einstein Medical Center was called to help free the man.

Surgeons worked for two hours and eventually had to amputate the man's leg. He reportedly remained conscious during the procedure and was taken to Aria Health/Torresdale in critical condition.

What the man was doing on the tracks remains unclear.

Grant Avenue was shut down near the scene for several hours for investigation.
