Off-duty Philadelphia police officer killed in hit-and-run, suspect in custody

Striking vehicle hit officer riding motorcycle on East Roosevelt Boulevard and Deveroux Avenue

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer died Sunday afternoon of injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash.

The officer, who has not been identified, was struck by a vehicle while riding a motorcycle on East Roosevelt Boulevard and Deveroux Avenue at approximately 4:10 p.m, NBC 10 reports. The striking vehicle, which fled the scene, was later found at Bustleton and Deveroux Avenue.

According to 6ABC, a suspect has been taken into police custody.

The police officer was taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital and was pronounced dead at 5:02 p.m.

A procession for the fallen officer was held starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, with an escort traveling down I-95 to I-676 and onto I-76 to take the body to the Medical Examiner's Office located on South University Avenue in University City. 

NBC 10 reports that this marks the ninth deadly hit-and-run in Philadelphia since the start of 2014, according to police data.
