South Jersey native Kelly Ripa to receive GLAAD award

Kelly Ripa will receive the Excellence in Media award from LGBT media activist group GLAAD.

Ripa, a native of Stratford, New Jersey, is being recognized for being a media professional who has "made a significant difference in promoting equality." She is the co-host of LIVE with Kelly and Michael on ABC, and has been chosen partly because of her sharing the experiences of friends that are members of the LGBT community on her show.

A vocal supporter of marriage equality, Ripa has also participated in several GLAAD events that promote understanding for LGBT youth. She has been active with the Point Foundation, which provides scholarships to LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) students who have faced hardship based on their sexuality, such as rejection from their families.

Ripa will receive the award from CNN anchor and reporter Anderson Cooper. Cooper, who is gay, has co-hosted with Ripa on her morning show.

Recent recipients of the award include Russell Simmons, Joy Behar, and Tyra Banks. The award will be presented May 9 during GLAAD's 26th annual Media Awards in New York City.
