Bill for paid sick leave in N.J. expected to advance

The Senate Labor Committee is scheduled to consider a bill Monday afternoon that would require all New Jersey employers to provide paid sick leave to their workers, NJ.com reports.

The legislation (S785) would allow workers to use the leave for their own illness, to care for a family member or if the employee or a family member is a victim of domestic violence.

"This is what family values are all about," the bill's sponsor, state Sen. Loretta Weinberg, told NJ.com.

Workers would accumulate an hour of sick time for every 30 worked. Companies with 10 or fewer workers would have to allow workers to earn at least 40 hours of sick leave. Those with more than 10 would have to offer at least 72 hours.

Newark and Jersey City are among several state municipalities that have already passed their own paid sick leave ordinances.

Philadelphia's paid sick leave law went into effect last month after Mayor Michael Nutter signed a bill to approve it despite vetoing similar legislation in 2011 and 2013.
