State Rep. Joe Hackett, R-Delaware County, is resigning his post at the end of the month, prompting a special election for the seat.

Hackett, who was first elected to the state House in 2010, announced the news last week, according to PoliticsPA

Hackett, a former police officer, released a statement saying he realized his true passion is in law enforcement.

"Coming from a family of blue bloods – my grandfather, wife, father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and three nephews – I’ve realized that law enforcement is not just a career – it’s a calling,” Hackett said in his statement. “My family supports my decision, just as they did in my initial run for the House in 2008. I have to admit, it will be good to be back home.”

He defeated Democrat Leanne Krueger-Braneky in November's general election in one of four hotly-contested Delco races that featured televised political ads. Republicans won each of the races.
