Live MLB free agency news, updates, rumors: Are Phillies leaders to sign closer Craig Kimbrel?

The hot stove continues to have news for Phillies fans, as it seems as though nearly every day a new rumor emerges linking Philadelphia with a big name.

After hearing yesterday that the Phillies are in talks to acquire former Astros lefty Dallas Keuchel — though a sixth year on a deal appears to be a stumbling block — today it appears the Phils are also favored to sign closer Craig Kimbrel. Except, maybe not.

Here's what MLB.com's Richard Justice had to say on MLBNetwork (h/t to thatballsouttahere):

I think inside the industry the feeling is the Phillies are going to sign Craig Kimbrel… the industry says the Phillies, but never count out the Red Sox. [MLB Network]

Kimbrel, of course, had 42 saves last season and a 2.74 ERA. In his career (nine MLB seasons), the ace reliever has saved 333 games — 14th on the all time list at just age 30 — with a 1.91 ERA. Clearly, the Phillies would benefit from having him anchor their bullpen.

With Seranthony Dominguez likely the future closer, it makes sense why Philly may not want to commit to Kimbrel long term. But as with pretty much every other free agent this winter, years are a sticking point.

Already this offseason via trade, the Phillies have added Juan Nicasio, James Pazos, and Jose Alvarez to what is now a much deeper bullpen than a season ago.
