South Jersey high school student drowns in Gloucester County lake

Victor Rodriguez, an 18-year-old senior at Pitman High School, drowned Sunday night during a swim in Alcyon Lake in Gloucester County, officials said.

Search crews have recovered the body of an 18-year-old who drowned while swimming in Alcyon Lake in Gloucester County on Sunday night, authorities said. 

Victor Rodriguez, a senior at Pitman High School, was found by divers on Monday after a search that lasted more than 17 hours, the Pitman Borough officials said.

Divers were called to the lake around 9 p.m. for a report of a missing swimmer in the area of Cedar and West Holly avenues.

Search crews from neighboring Camden County said Rodriguez went missing while attempting to swim across the lake as part of a scavenger hunt. The lake is part of Alcyon Lake Park, a popular place for fishing and bird watching. 

Razze was on track to graduate Wednesday alongside with the class of 2023. The school has canceled all remaining exams and brought in support staff for students on Monday. The graduation ceremony will continue as planned on Wednesday night.
