Beachgoers in Delaware received a surprise on Friday in the form of a massive whale.

According to delmarvanow.com, a humpback whale washed ashore with the morning tide on Bethany Beach near Pelican Pouch.

The whale was approximately 30 feet long and had a large gash on its neck that could have been caused by a boat propeller. Decomposition suggested that the whale was dead for two weeks.

Suzanne Thurman, executive director of the MERR Institute, told WBOC16 the cause of death is still unclear. Thurman said that determining the cause of death is important because whales can be used to test the quality of the water.
