'Dream Scenario,' the 2023 surreal comedy from the director of 'The Drama,' is available on Kanopy.
If you've been on social media for the past week, you've probably heard about "The Drama" — either through its stars Robert Pattinson and Zendaya's ongoing press tour or the chatter around the movie's big twist.
It's a doozy, one that's already dividing critics and bound to polarize audiences. And while it's best to see it blind, curious moviegoers can prep for the general style and tone of "The Drama" by streaming its director's last big feature.
That's "Dream Scenario," the surreal Nicolas Cage comedy from 2023. It's heading to Kanopy, the platform free to anyone with a Philly library card, and it leads our latest streaming guide.
"The Devil Wears Prada" has also hit multiple platforms ahead of its May sequel, giving fans a solid month to brush up on their pithiest Miranda Priestly lines. There's a dumb throwback comedy and a devastating period piece, too, for anyone in need of a good cry. Here's what to know before you press play:
"Dream Scenario" hinges on the following pitch: What if a random, unremarkable man started appearing in everyone's dreams? Now imagine that man is Nicolas Cage and you've got the basic idea.
Writer-director Kristoffer Borgli already demonstrates sharp comedic sensibilities in his casting of Cage, the actor responsible for over 100 films and about half of the jokes on the internet, as a man haunting the world's subconscious. But the gimmick pays off as "Dream Scenario" veers into the surreal and becomes a biting satire of modern fame. It arrives on Kanopy, accessible with your Free Library card, on Friday.
Watch an effortlessly chic and cruel Meryl Streep torture her assistant in this peak inside the offices of "Vogue" "Runway" magazine. Streep's performance as Anna Wintour avatar Miranda Priestly seeped instantly into the pop culture lexicon thanks to the "cerulean" monologue heard 'round the world and her impressively icy one-liners. (Even Michael Scott paid tribute in an "Office" cold open.) But the 2006 movie also features great turns from Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway as Miranda's minions. All of them are back for the late-breaking sequel "The Devil Wears Prada 2," but you can stream their first outing on Hulu or Max.
This 2007 drama also delivers a show-stopping fashion moment through Keira Knightley's green evening dress, which inspired untold Pinterest boards and its own Wikipedia page. But "Atonement" is hardly a romp through the glossy magazine world.
The period piece opens in 1930s England on the estate of the wealthy Tallis family. Briony (Saoirse Ronan), a precocious 13-year-old, observes a flirtation between her older sister Cecilia (Knightley) and their housekeeper's son Robbie (James McAvoy). But she mistakes it for something more sinister, leading to grave consequences for the young couple. The action then fast-forwards to World War II, with Robbie in the army and the sisters both nurses, but not on speaking terms. Briony has realized her mistake and wants to make things right. Viewers won't get the full picture of what happened, however, until yet another time jump.
Like the Ian McEwan novel it's based on, "Atonement" is a gut-wrenching romance. Have an emotional support human/pet/pillow at the ready before you head to Netflix.
Slacker metalheads Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) graduate from public access television to the big leagues in this 1992 comedy, newly streaming on Peacock and Paramount+.
"Wayne's World," the first spin-off of the popular "Saturday Night Live" sketch, finds our heroes struggling to adapt their late-night show for the masses under the direction of a smarmy exec (Rob Lowe). That guy also has his eye on Wayne's rocker girlfriend Cassandra (Tia Carrere), setting up a classic battle between the uncompromising artists — if you can call what Wayne and Garth do art — and corporate sellouts.
"Wayne's World" has the same goofy energy of the original "SNL" skit, just on a grander scale. It also boasts creative new ways to insult enemies and any resident of Delaware.
