MD Anderson at Cooper has expanded its prostate cancer treatment program with the addition of robotic high-intensity focused ultrasound, a groundbreaking therapy designed to treat tumors without surgery or radiation.
At Cooper, the robotic HIFU system is now available for select prostate cancer patients. Cooper is one of the first health systems in southern New Jersey to offer the procedure, which uses focused ultrasound waves to heat and destroy cancerous tissue inside the prostate while minimizing damage to nearby healthy areas.
The procedure is completed in a single session under general anesthesia and does not involve incisions, radiation, or surgical removal of the prostate. By targeting only the diseased portion of the gland, the treatment is designed to reduce the risk of side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction while allowing many patients to return to normal work and daily activities with minimal disruption.
Research evaluating the robotic HIFU system has shown cancer control comparable to surgery while reducing the risk of functional side effects. A prospective study involving more than 3,000 patients across 46 centers found improved urinary continence and erectile function outcomes compared with patients who underwent prostate removal surgery.
“With the recent publication of the HIFI Study, we are confident in HIFU as a treatment option and its outcomes, which produce better results for men’s urinary continence and erectile function,” said Dr. Jeffrey J. Tomaszewski, head of the Division of Urology and director of genitourinary oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.
The addition of robotic HIFU expands Cooper’s prostate cancer program with another option for patients seeking less invasive care. The technology reflects a growing shift toward targeted treatments that aim to manage cancer effectively while preserving quality of life.
