Distrito restaurant in University City

Chef Jose Garces has given the first floor of his Distrito restaurant in University City a makeover, Philadelphia Business Journal reports.

The Mexican restaurant at 40th and Chestnut streets has revamped its first floor into Distrito Taqueria, which features a menu "inspired by the street food heritage in Mexico City's taco shops."

Led by John Weckerly of Boxwood Architects, the first-floor renovation includes decor changes, including laser-cut paper flags, market lights, swing-set seating, picnic benches, and glitter- and floral-topped high-top seating.

Tacos, burritos and quesadillas will make up the first-floor menu, while the second floor will maintain the original Distrito menu. A full bar will feature Distrito's margaritas, along with more than 250 tequilas and 128-ounce beer towers.

Distrito is not the only one of Garces' restaurants getting a makeover. Rosa Blanca at Seventh and Walnut streets will reopen in the fall as a coffee rum bar concept. Bar Volver at the Kimmel Center reopened Wednesday.

Amada, Garces' first Philadelphia restaurant, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this October.
