A New Jersey man has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy who was a member of the Boy Scout troop he was involved with decades ago.
According to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, 57-year-old Vincent Watkins of Middle Township was arrested and charged Thursday after an investigation into suspicious activity between juvenile members at the Bethel Commandment Church in Whitesboro and its Boy Scout troop.
Watkins was a member of both the troop and the church during the early 1990's, according to authorities. Prosecutor's say that in July 1991, he sexually assaulted a juvenile male involved at the church's Boy Scout troop who was between the ages of 13 and 16.
Watkins is being held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $100,000 bail. He faces a sexual assault charge, a second-degree crime, which carries an advisory sentence of 5-10 years in state prison if convicted.
The investigation is considered ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135 or the Middle Township Police Department at 609-465-8700.
