The Market Street Bridge, above, is closed to drivers until October 2027 as part of a $149 million revitalization project.
The Market Street Bridge in Center City will be closed to vehicular traffic for the next 14 months as PennDOT completes the next stage of the $149 million project to revitalize the bridge.
The bridge is expected to remain closed to motorists through October 2027, but it will remain open to pedestrians and bicyclists. The bridge connects Center City to 30th Street Station, crossing over Interstate 76, rail lines and the Schuylkill River.

The revitalization project began in March, but the bridge had remained open to traffic until now. Even after it reopens, repair work will continue until 2029.
Drivers heading eastbound toward Center City are being redirected to the Chestnut Street Bridge. Motorists heading westbound toward University City are advised to use the Walnut Street Bridge. Periodic lane closures on I-76 are also expected going forward.
Six bus routes — the 31, 44, 49, 124, 125 and the L1 Owl — are being detoured, West Philly Local reported.
During construction, the superstructure of the bridge at the intersection of Schuylkill Avenue and Market Street will be demolished and rebuilt. Adjacent sidewalks over the river and the portion of the bridge that goes over the Schuylkill River Trail and the CSX railroad will be replaced by retaining walls and a single-span bridge.
The bridge will be repaved, with wide sidewalks and two-way bikes lanes with concrete barriers. Crews will install a bicycle signal at Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue.
The revitalization projection also includes new lighting, repairs to the river walls and a pedestrian staircase, and upgrades to traffic signals near the bridge.
The federal government is funding the majority of the project; the state is covering the rest.
