While the Eagles may have had the most active offseason in Chip Kelly's first year with "the juice," the rest of the NFC East has been comparatively quiet, yet still active. Let's recap what the Eagles' enemies have done during free agency, starting with the division doormat.
Gains
- Chris Culliver, CB, 49ers, 4 years, $32 million: Bigger CB at 6'0, 199 who will start, likely opposite Bashaud Breeland.
- Terrance Knighton, NT, Broncos, 1 year, $4 million: Big boy at 6'3, 331, who the Skins will plug in the middle of their D line.
- Stephen Paea, DT, Bears: 4 years, $21 million: More beef for the D line. Paea will likely move over to DE in the Skins' odd man front.
- Jeron Johnson, S, Seahawks, 2 years, $4 million: The Eagles aren't the only NFC East team that tries to poach non-Pro Bowl Seahawks defensive backs.
Losses
- Brian Orakpo, OLB, signed with Titans: 40 sacks in 6 seasons, missed 24 games the last three years.
- Roy Helu, RB, signed with Raiders: Nice role player back with receiving ability.
- Leonard Hankerson, WR, signed with Falcons: Former 3rd round pick never panned out with the Skins.
Re-signed
- Colt McCoy, QB: Part of the Skins' QB love triangle a year ago.
- Niles Paul, TE: Versatile TE and special teamer.
#JimmyFiveSecondAnalysis: Clearly, the Redskins wanted to bolster their defense, adding a pair of beefy guys to their DL, and a pair of defensive backs.
Gains
- Shane Vereen RB, Patriots, 3 years, $12.35 million: Excellent pass catching receiver out of the backfield to pair with Andre Williams, who can't catch a cold.
- Dwayne Harris, WR/KR, Cowboys, 5 years, $17.5 million: Among my favorite players in the division. Very good returner and special teams ace on coverage teams, YAC ability in passing game. The Giants got killed for the perceived sizable contract they gave him. I couldn't disagree more -- He's worth it.
- J.T. Thomas, Jaguars, 3 years, $12 million: 84 tackles, 2 FF, 2 INT with Jags a year ago.
- Kenrick Ellis, DT, Jets, 1 year, $1.65 million: Humongous 6'4, 346 body.
Losses
- Antrel Rolle, CB, signed with Bears: Staple of Giants defense for years, age started to catch up.
- Walter Thurmond, CB, signed with Eagles: Played just 2 games as Giants free agent acquisition a year ago.
Re-signed
- Henry Hynoski, FB: Yes, some NFL teams still have a fullback.
- Chykie Brown, CB: 0 INTs in 4 NFL seasons.
- John Jerry, OG: Replacement level OG.
#JimmyFiveSecondAnalysis: I like the Giants' additions of Vereen, who gives them a pass catching presence in the backfield that they've been missing, and Dwayne Harris, who is an A+ special teamer.
Gains
- Greg Hardy, DE, Panthers, 1 year, $11.3 million: Talented pass rusher who faced extremely serious allegations, and missed 15 games of the 2014 season as a result.
- Darren McFadden, RB, Raiders, 2 years, $3 million: Last 3 seasons, YPC: 3.3, 3.3, 3.4.
- Corey White, CB, Saints, 1 year, $1.542 million: Brutal 2014 as starter, moved to sub-package role mid-season.
- Jed Collins, FB, Lions: Another fullback!
- Andrew Gachkar, LB, Chargers, 2 years, $5.2 million: Special teams help and versatile reserve linebacker, but not an ideal starter.
- Jasper Brinkley, LB, Vikings, 2 year deal, money unknown: Again, just depth at LB.
Losses
- DeMarco Murray, RB, signed with Eagles: Many Cowboys fans believe anyone can run behind Dallas' offensive line. We'll see.
- Jermey Parnell, OT, signed with Jaguars: Quality swing tackle for Cowboys, depth with be missed.
- Dwayne Harris, KR/WR, signed with Giants: As noted above, an A+ special teamer.
- Justin Durant, LB, signed with Falcons: Athletic role player who played well for Dallas.
- Henry Melton, DT, signed with Buccaneers: 2nd on the Cowboys with 5 sacks in 2014 from interior DL spot.
- Bruce Carter, LB, signed with Buccaneers: Talented LB with a high ceiling who never put it all together for the Cowboys.
Re-signed
- Doug Free, OT: Personally, if I were the Cowboys, I would have rather re-signed Jermey Parnell.
#JimmyFiveSecondAnalysis: For the second offseason in a row, the Cowboys lost a number of quality players. Last year it didn't hurt them. Will it bite them in 2015?
