The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Monday that it is implementing a safer, more efficient left turn signal in various traffic lights across the state, beginning with a deployment in Lower Allen Township in Cumberland County.
The new signal, a flashing yellow arrow, is intended to provide a more intuitive sign for motorists making left turns at busy intersections. At designated left turn traffic lights, the second facet from the bottom will display a flashing yellow arrow that means drivers should yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding with caution. Eventually, the new indication will replace the common circular green indication for left turns.
Officials say the new signal will give drivers more opportunities to make left turns when the opposite roadway is clear of cars and pedestrians.
To help drivers adjust, PennDOT released a video explaining how motorists should respond to the signals.
The transition is backed by national data that shows the new signal could reduce left turn crashes by as much as 20 percent, according to PennDOT. The change will also align Pennsylvania with other states adopting it.
