Pew: Philadelphia is home to greatest number of adults who have never been married

Philadelphia, among the 10 most populous U.S. cities, has the highest percentage of adults who have never been married, according to a study from the Pew Charitable Trusts published Tuesday.

Bad news if you were hoping to get married in the near future – that figure has been steadily growing during the last 10 years with little expectation the trend will change anytime soon, according to the research.

Fifty-two percent of adults in Philly said they've never been married, jumping nine percentage points from 2005, according to the study that used data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The closest city to behind Philly is Chicago, where 49 percent of adults reported that they've never been married. That figure compares to about 34 percent of never-married adults nationally.

Philly's statistic consists mostly of men at 54 percent. Forty-nine percent of Philly's never-married population are women.

However, Philly's high rate of unmarried adults is in-line with other high-poverty cities, according to Pew's research.

About 55 percent of adults in Detroit, 53 percent in Baltimore and 52 percent in Milwaukee say they've never married. (None of those cities is among the 10 most populated in the U.S.)

Researchers said the high rates could be related to a number of reasons, including more young adults moving into cities across the nation who are looking to get married later in life.
