Police: Intoxicated suspect charged after driving into Atlantic City bay

23-year-old driver and passenger escaped vehicle through open windows

Police in Atlantic City have charged a 23-year-old man with Driving While Intoxicated after he steered his vehicle into an Atlantic City bay.

According to authorities, police responded to the bay off Annapolis Avenue at around 6:30 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of a car in the water, NJ.com reports. When officers arrived at the scene, they found that two individuals had escaped from the car's open windows before it became fully submerged.

Police Sgt. Kevin Fair said the driver, Juan Crespo, was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division to undergo evaluation during an official accident investigation. The passenger of the vehicle, who has not been identified, was treated at the scene.

The vehicle was later removed from the bay by a tow car.
