Adam Taliaferro tapped for NJ state house

Victim of a spinal cord injury, ex-PSU football player's work in state assembly will focus on healthcare

Gloucester County Freeholder Adam Taliaferro has been appointed to the vacant Third District Assembly seat, several media sources report.

"The great health care I had in my personal life gave me a second opportunity at life," Taliaferro told NJ.com. "I look forward to being sworn in and getting committee assignments, whatever they may be."

Taliaferro, a Democrat, will join Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assemblyman John Burzichelli, also Democrats, representing the Third District, which includes Salem County as well as portions of Cumberland and Gloucester counties.

In a phone interview with NJ.com, Taliaferro said his goal in the state assembly is to be an advocate for health care – a personal mission.

In 2000, Taliaferro, then a Penn State football player, suffered a spinal cord injury during a game that left him paralyzed. At the time, doctors said he had a 3 percent chance of walking again, but he beat the odds and went on to earn a law degree.

"The great health care I had in my personal life gave me a second opportunity at life," Taliaferro told NJ.com. "I look forward to being sworn in and getting committee assignments, whatever they may be."
