A grisly crash in Long Island, New York, left four women dead on Saturday when a pick-up truck T-boned and nearly severed the limousine their group had hired in order to responsibly tour the area's local wineries.
The crash occurred in Cutchogue on the North Fork of Long Island at around 5:15 p.m. as the limo attempted to make a U-Turn, Southold Town Police told The New York Post. Eight women, all between 23 and 24 years old, were inside the vehicle.
The driver of the Dodge pick-up truck survived the impact, but instead of remaining at the scene of the crash, fled into the woods along the highway. Police pursued the man, who was not identified, and arrested him on charges of driving while intoxicated.
Three of the young women in the limousine were pronounced dead at the scene by first responders, while a fourth victim later died at a nearby hospital. The survivors were transported to hospitals and were described by an eyewitness as shocked, unable to scream or react to the devastation in front of them.
Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley said the limo driver may bear some responsibility for the accident due to the illegal U-turn that likely occupied two or three lanes as the vehicle turned onto the westbound side of Route 48.
