The walks will detail the areas' past and future

East Passyunk Avenue, just outside Black 'n Brew.

Just as you can never judge a person until you walk in their shoes, the same goes for a place until you've walked on its pavements.

At least that's the thought behind the free guided walking tours planned in South Philly this weekend, May 2 and 3.

The walks are inspired by Jane Jacobs’ book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" and will take two-footed travelers on a one-hour trek through the streets of East Passyunk - on Saturday, May 2, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. - and through the Old Southwark District – on Sunday, May 3, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Bing Bing Dim Sum Exterior
Bing Bing Dim Sum on East Passyunk opened in February in the former location of the Mexican restaurant El Zarape. Thom Carroll/PhillyVoice.

The walks will include histories of the places as well as what's planned to come.
