This year the Kimmel Center will present two special, free events for the holiday season in the Commonwealth Plaza. The first, "Christmas Posada," takes place Thursday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. and is part of the Kimmel Center's "Philly ¡En Vivo! Series."

During the nine days leading to Christmas Day, Mexico celebrates popular festivities known as Las Posadas. These widespread celebrations commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem while they searched for a place to stay and await the birth of Jesus.

"Christmas Posada" at the Kimmel Center was created through help by the Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural CenterThere will be a display of community piñatas, the breaking of a piñata, and a performance by Jarana Beat, a Mexican contemporary folk band. Traditional "Ponche," which is a Mexican Christmas fruit punch, will also be offered for sale by Garces Events (children 12 and under free). The punch traditionally can be made with or without alcohol

The other free event at the Kimmel Center in December is "Tuba Christmas." On Dec. 20, at noon and 5 p.m., holiday classics will be performed by more than 100 regional tuba, sousaphone, and euphonium players.

The Kimmel Center also offers photos with Santa on Dec. 5, 12 and 19 from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Commonwealth Plaza.
