Celebrate National Dog Day with these pup-friendly activities

There's nothing like owning a dog.

True dog lovers would do just about anything for their furry best friend because they know their pup would do the same.

After all, a dog's love is unconditional.

So on National Dog Day on Wednesday, why not show Fido some extra love?

From letting him (or her) roam around the dog park, to enjoying a nice canine snack, there are plenty of ways to celebrate man's best friend.

Philadelphia is a very dog-friendly city, with parks and green spaces that are a dog’s paradise. Take your pup out for a day of running around, playing fetch and enjoying some fresh air.

There are parks designed especially for dogs, like the Schuylkill River Park at 25th and Spruce, featuring synthetic turf known as K-9 grass and frost-free water fountains. Seger Dog Park near 10th and Lombard is another good spot. At both friendly runs, dogs may enjoy being off-leash. Check out more local dog parks here.

Dilworth Park is celebrating the "Dog Days" with pet adoptions, expert advice and giveaways.

Come on. Who doesn't like presents? Whether it's a new toy, a shiny collar or that top-notch leash, your dog will love being spoiled. Especially if it's with food.

Bring on the treats. Just Dogs and Cats Gourmet on Sansom Street provides tasty treats and confections, hand-made using only all-natural, human-grade ingredients. You can also check out Amelie's Bark Shop on East Passyunk Avenue for a selection of homemade treats.

Have a puppy photo shoot.

Puppy selfies are the best kind of selfies.

Dog lovers are always taking pictures of their pups. Why not do a full-on photo shoot? Grab some sunglasses or little outfits and play dress up with Fido. It'll make for some priceless pics to share with friends and family. Not to mention, you'll make great memories together in the process. Snap some selfies while you're at it. One couple even did a newborn photo shoot with their dog.

Throw a party!

Everyone enjoys a good party. Invite all of your friends and their dogs over for a fiesta at your place. Or if you want to avoid the mess, Central Bark, a dog day care center at 25th and Wharton, even hosts full-blown dog parties with decorations, cake and more. It'll be a barkin' good time.

Don't have a dog of your own?

You could consider adopting a dog from your local shelter or rescue organization. If you don't have the time to devote to owning a dog, you can also volunteer at your local shelter and offer to walk a dog or play with one. Street Tails Animal Rescue in Northern Liberties welcomes volunteers to help with everyday activities, chores, events and other duties at the shelter. Fill out an application to volunteer here

All dogs need love. Show a dog, any dog, that you care. Happy National Dog Day!
