A joint, two-month investigation has resulted in 16 arrests and the seizure of weapons and massive amounts of drugs in South Jersey, authorities said Saturday afternoon.
According to the Atlantic Count Prosecutor's Office, a combination of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies executed a series of warrants during the early morning hours Thursday in the Pleasantville and Egg Harbor City areas.
Agents seized 21 firearms, ammunition, about 10 ounces of cocaine and more than 10,000 bags of heroin and fentanyl, authorities said.
The bust disrupted a gun and drug trafficking supply chain that originated in the Southern U.S., and among those arrested was Joshua Sims, 18, who was taken into custody in his home state of Georgia by federal authorities.
The alleged ring leader of the operation was Kenneth J. Burrell, 39, of Egg Harbor City, who faces 16 charges including being the leader of a narcotics trafficking network and various counts of drug and illegal firearm possession.
“This investigation, and the arrests and seizures of contraband that resulted from it, displays the coordinated work done in Atlantic County by all levels of law enforcement to combat both the widespread drug epidemic and the gun violence problems that plague our country," said Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner in a press release.
