Jared McCain will miss time to start the new season.

Jared McCain will undergo surgery on his right thumb after suffering a torn UCL. He will miss approximately 4-6 weeks, according to a report from Shams Charania of ESPN:

McCain suffered the injury on Thursday and was present at the Sixers' practice facility in Camden for Media Day on Friday, but he did not speak to reporters. President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey called the injury "fluky" and said the team was still conferring with doctors about possible treatment options.

Ultimately, a surgery is where they appear to have landed.

McCain's stellar rookie campaign was cut short after 23 games. Now the start of his sophomore season is going to be delayed. With the restricted free agency of Quentin Grimes still unresolved and McCain now out for an extended period, rookie No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe could be thrown into a higher-profile role quicker than expected.
