Zipcar offering free rentals on election night

Zipcar is a car-sharing service that allows users to rent vehicles by the hour.

Zipcar, a car-sharing service that allows users to rent cars by the hour, is making more than 300 cars in Philadelphia available for free rental on election night.

Users can take out the cars on Tuesday between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The free service is part of Zipcar's national #DRIVEtheVOTE campaign, but it particularly could be useful in Philadelphia if SEPTA transit workers remain on strike. SEPTA is preparing to file a court injunction that could force the transit workers to return for Election Day.

Members can reserve free Zipcars on the mobile app or online. Prospective members can join by downloading the app.

Across the country, Zipcar is making thousands of cars available to ensure last-minute voters have a cost-effective way to get to the polls.

Lyft, a ride-sharing service, is offering a 45 percent discount for one ride on Election Day taken between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Current Lyft riders can access the promotion through a "Deal of the Week" email being sent on Sunday. New users can use the code "NOVEMBER8TH to receive $5 off their first 10 rides.

In Pennsylvania, polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Anyone standing in line at 8 p.m. gets to vote.
