Local retailers on their way to beer delivery

Hawthornes in South Philly among applicants to get license from PLCB

Bars Beer

Get the door, beer's here.

It turns out that getting the LCB to authorize beer delivery, aka the dream, was just a letter away. And now it's a reality.

As Philly.com reported, the state's Liquor Control Board validated the sale of delivery beer (up to two six-packs) in an email response to a request from gourmet beer shop Hawthornes owner Chris Fetfatzes. Retail businesses apparently have the option to deliver beer once they obtain a transporter-for-hire license, which costs around $1,000

Stacy Kriedman, Director of External Affairs for PLCB, told PhillyVoice.com the law isn’t new; it got “a lot of press” when a licensee in Meadville, Pa. asked whether they could ship a six-pack to out-of-state customers.

Somehow, she says, a blog in Pittsburgh got hold of the opinion and news spread fast. Now the total count of businesses applying for the Class-B transporter-for-hire license in Pa is up to 22.

That figure includes Pete's Famous Pizza in Fairmount on 21st St. between Arch and Cherry in Philadelphia, as well as Abbey Wright Brewing Co. located in the Valley Inn of Lyoming County.

Kriedman says it can take as little as a couple of weeks to issue a license, after businesses get tax clearance.

A rep for Hawthornes, which burned down in February 2014, told PhillyVoice.com the shop will reopen by Sunday, Jan. 11, and yes, they have a license to deliver.

Let the Hawthornes Quick Slip - per Philly Mag, a beer-on-ice-on-motorcycle delivery system - begin!
